►Microchip received US subsidies to expand MCU production
According to SemiMedia, the U.S. Department of Commerce stated on January 4 that it plans to provide a subsidy of US$162 million to Microchip, the original chip manufacturer, to strengthen the manufacturing capabilities of mature process chips in the United States. The grant is part of the America CHIP Act incentives.
Of this amount, approximately $90 million will be used to modernize and expand the manufacturing facility in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and approximately $72 million will be used to expand the manufacturing facility in Gresham, Oregon. The projects are estimated to nearly triple Microchip's semiconductor production at these locations, reducing reliance on foreign manufacturing and strengthening supply chain resiliency.
